Bidfood brings jobs and growth to Morwell

14/08/2023

A new $13 million state-of-the-art cold storage and food distribution warehouse is up and running in the Latrobe Valley, thanks to support from the Victorian Government.

Bidfood’s new site in Morwell is up and running and will create 40 new jobs for a mix of skilled technical, transport and management workers.

The Victorian Government’s investment in the project boosts support for a strong economy backed by Gippsland’s $7 billion food and fibre sector.

Bidfood is a wholesale food service provider, preparing meals outside of the home environment. Its customers include hospitals, health and aged care facilities, restaurants, hotels, clubs and catering companies.

It was previously servicing the Gippsland region from its Dandenong warehouse, adding distance and time to its local supply chain. Its new distribution centre in Morwell is expected to grow the company’s annual revenue by up to 20 per cent due to the efficient and competitive supply of food products from the Latrobe Valley.

The expansion supports the continued growth of the state’s freight and supply chain sector which contributes about $21 billion to the Victorian economy each year.

Bidfood operates seven sites in Victoria located at Morwell, Bendigo, Dandenong, Geelong, Port Melbourne, and Truganina. It has 45 cold storage facilities across Australia in total, servicing more than 50,000 customers.

Its new warehouse and distribution centre occupies more than 4,000 square metres in Morwell and includes dry, freezer and chiller storage as well as administration facilities.

Support for the expansion is part of the Government’s $2 billion investment in projects and programs that have added thousands of jobs to the Latrobe Valley’s workforce since 2014, supporting the region’s economic transition.

The Government continues to build on this support, including through funding announced in this year’s Budget to enable the Latrobe Valley Authority to continue their work as part of our broader investment in the region.

The Bidfood project is part of the Victorian Government’s record investment of more than $41 billion across rural and regional Victoria since 2015.
