Her Majesty’s Theatre redevelopment nearing completion
05/03/2024Anticipation is building at Her Majesty’s Theatre, as the beloved cultural icon edges closer towards a grand reopening.
The venue opened in 1875 and is the oldest purpose-built and continuously used live theatre in Australia. It's currently undergoing the third and final stage of restoration works.
The stage 3 works will improve the capability, accessibility and safety of the 149-year-old building. Once complete, they'll ensure that audience members, staff and performers of all abilities feel welcome and comfortable to work at the venue.
Works are now focusing on installing two lifts, upgrading fire protection in the auditorium and completing the Unicorn Lane fire escape.
Also on the way are an improved front-of-house area, new toilets, an administration area and associated compliance works.
Major demolition and structural works are nearing completion throughout the building, which will soon feature new southern fire escape stairs and a reconfiguration of the back-of-house area.
Importantly, this reconfiguration will provide an accessible pathway from Lewis Street to Lydiard Street South.
Activity inside the theatre is now moving towards the final fit-out and finish in many areas, with finished colour schemes evident throughout the new administration hub.
Installation of joinery, including the ticket box and bar, is yet to commence, with most items now in production off-site.
Works to upgrade the back-of-house amenities are also underway, and fire protection upgrades throughout the building are ongoing.
The restoration of Her Majesty’s Theatre was identified as a priority project by the City of Ballarat and is supported with $10 million from the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund.
The City of Ballarat has also provided $6.3 million for the works and will soon call for Expressions of Interest for community and commercial hire of the venue.
Stage 3 works are on track for completion by mid-year, and it is anticipated that a grand reopening of Her Majesty’s Theatre will take place later this year.
